But what ist the secret of the five digits? 46664 was Nelson Mandela’s prisoner number on Robben Island: he was inmate number 466, incarcerated in 1964. 46664, a 100% subsidiary of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was founded in 2003. And in 2006, Nelson Mandela started the campaign "46664 – It’s in our hands."

The campaign, which is the African answer to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, is financed not only through donations, but also by organising rock concerts and by selling bracelets, i.e. the “46664 Bangles,” which were first presented to the public in London’s Hyde Park on 27 June 2008 during an outdoor concert to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s ninetieth birthday.

Two-thirds of the profits from the sales of the bangles flow into two channels. The first channel directly supports the initiatives and programs of the 46664 campaign of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the second use for the profits is to support the continuing education and qualification of craftspeople.
